What are cookies and how are they used?

Cookies are small pieces of information, usually consisting of letters and numbers, that online services (e.g. a website) provide when users visit them. Software (e.g. a web browser) on the user's device (e.g. computer, phone, tablet) can store cookies and send them back to the website on the next visit.

Cookies are used in a variety of ways, including :

  • memorization of choices made by the user ;
  • help users connect to a website ;
  • website traffic analysis; or
  • tracking user browsing behavior.

Cookies can be useful because they enable a website to recognize a user's device and preferences. They are widely used to make websites work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to site owners. Without cookies, or any other similar method, websites would have no way of "remembering" anything about visitors, such as previous language choices or whether they are logged in.

What types of cookies are used?

Depending on who manages them :

  • First-party cookies are set directly by the website the user is visiting, i.e. "multihealthgroup.com". For the website, these cookies are set and managed by MTH.
  • Third-party cookies are set by a domain other than the one the user is visiting. This usually occurs when a website incorporates elements from other sites, such as images, social media plugins or advertising. When the browser or other software retrieves these elements from other sites, it may also install cookies. These cookies are not managed by MTH, but by the third party that processes the data obtained from them.

Depending on their objective :

  • Strictly necessary cookies: These cookies are necessary for the operation of the website and cannot be deactivated in our systems. They are generally only installed in response to actions you perform that are equivalent to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or notify you of these cookies, but some parts of the site will not function. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.
  • Functional cookies: These cookies enable the website to offer enhanced functionality and personalization. They may be set by us or by third-party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies, some or all of these services may not function properly.
  • Performance cookies: These cookies enable us to count visits and traffic sources in order to measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and to see how visitors move around the site. All information collected by these cookies is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies, we will not know when you have visited our site and we will not be able to monitor its performance.
  • Targeting cookies: These cookies may be installed on our site by our advertising partners. They may be used by these companies to profile your interests and show you relevant advertisements on other sites. They do not store any directly personal information, but are based on the unique identification of your browser and Internet device. If you do not authorize these cookies, advertising will be less targeted.
  • Social media cookies: These cookies are defined by a series of social media services we have added to the site to enable you to share our content with your friends and networks. They are able to track your browser on other sites and profile your interests. This may affect the content and messages you see on other websites you visit. If you do not allow these cookies, you may not be able to use or view these sharing tools.

Depending on the storage period :

Cookies that expire at the end of a browsing session (normally when the user quits the browser) are called " session cookies". Cookies that can be stored for longer periods are called " persistent cookies".

  • Session cookies enable websites to recognize and link a user's actions during a "browsing session" (until the user closes the browser).

They can be used for a variety of purposes, for example to remember a setting chosen by a user when browsing a site. These cookies can also be used for security purposes, for example when a user logs on to an account. These session cookies expire at the end of the session, so information is not stored beyond this period.

  • Persistent cookies are stored on a user's device during different browsing sessions. They can be used to remember the user's preferences or actions on a site (or on different websites). The length of time between the installation of a cookie and its expiry may be defined by MTH or by third parties, where third-party cookies may be used. A user may also manually delete previously installed persistent cookies or configure browser settings to delete cookies at a given interval.

Persistent cookies can be used for a variety of purposes, including remembering users' preferences and choices when they use a site beyond a single browsing session, or for targeting advertising.
